We were invited to take part in a litter pick last Tuesday in gorgeous Valentines Park by our friends at Mont Rose College in Gants Hill.
It was all part of their plan to raise awareness and acceptance of autism during Autism Acceptance Week and it was a fabulous initiative. Mont Rose’s motto is 'Together we thrive to create awareness' and that was certainly in evidence last Tuesday.
The Sycamore Trust team of Steve Dixon, Robert Lamb and Joseph Allford arrived at the college on Tuesday morning, which had been decorated for the occasion, to find that staff and students at Mont Rose had raised £1,000 to help us provide support to the autistic community in Redbridge.
After receiving the cheque from former Paralympian, Deputy Lieutenant Mike Brace CBE, Steve was asked to say a few words of thanks, before Robert and Joseph conducted a prize draw.
The next stop was the award-winning Valentine’s Park, recently voted as one of the top ten parks in Britain and holder of a Green Flag Award. Around two dozen staff and students went to take part in a litter pick, although if truth be told, finding litter was not an easy task – the park was practically spotless, and looked magnificent in the spring sunshine. After an hour of searching, we managed half a dozen cigarette butts and a solitary plastic bottle, although some of the students collected a fair bit more.
It was all in the name of raising awareness and promoting understanding of autism, and it was a wonderful event. Thanks to everyone at Mont Rose, who have been great supporters of Sycamore Trust over the years. We delivered our CPD training there last year, and we look forward to returning for another visit again soon.
