End of an era!

Once a month in Havering, we run an Autism support group for pre-diagnosed and diagnosed adults and parent/carers of children with autism. This group has grown each month, it gives people a safe space to share their experiences and feel part of a social community.

In the groups, we speak about a wide variety of topics, and offer support with navigating difficult times.  We often have guest speakers who come and talk about other services in the borough. Parents feedback has shown the opportunity to be together and learn from each other is invaluable.

Sadly, last week's support group was the last one to be held in the Autism Hub in Romford's Liberty Shopping Centre, but rest assured, the service will continue, and we will shortly be able to announce the dates and venue for lour forthcoming group meetings.

In the meantime, it was the end of an era at the Autism Hub last week and we were delighted to see so many attendees.  As it was the last one in the Hub, several parents commented on just how important the support we have been able to offer has been.

"I started going to the Sycamore Trust parent support groups in June 2023. My son’s school had recommended the Sycamore Trust to me, at this time I was feeling very isolated, and didn’t have many people to talk to about being a parent and carer of an autistic child. From the first support meeting I went to, the support group has helped me immensely. Being able to talk to other Mums and Dad who are in similar situations helped to ease my mind a lot and always reminded me that no matter how isolating being a parent/carer can be, you’re truly not alone. Throughout the year I have been going to Sycamore Trust, my confidence in myself as a SEN parent has grown, and I have been lucky enough to make friends with some other parents who share similar experiences in their lives.

The Autism Hub in Romford has been a welcoming place with knowledgeable staff who have been willing to share their personal experiences, which in turn enabled us all to share family stories in a non judgemental environment. The monthly meetings I have attended have always been full to capacity, it is a very much needed service for our community.

I've felt really isolated and alone dealing with 3 neuro-divergent children and also feeling I am on the spectrum too, which I was able to share as I felt so comfortable. It's been so informative hearing lots of different information and strategies to support neuro-divergent children. I'm really grateful to have been included and I really look forward to the meetings.
