Any more fares!

The latest in our series of summer days out took place yesterday when a group of staff, volunteers and young people headed up into Covent Garden to visit the Transport Museum.  Last week, we went to Mudchute farm on the Isle of Dogs but it was a change of pace yesterday as ten young people boarded the district line to Embankment on a bright summers day. We enjoyed lunch in Royal Embankment Park before heading for Covent Garden where we saw some great street entertainers.

The main event was our visit to the London Transport Museum. The museum mainly hosts exhibits related to the heritage of London's transport, as well as conserving and explaining its history. Our the tour started by transporting us back to 1800, courtesy of a lift to the second floor where we saw some 19th century horse-drawn carriages that were used as public transport. A trip to the museum allows visitors to explore the heritage of London and its transport system, and the stories of the people who have travelled and worked in the city over the last 200 years, before taking a peek into how future technologies might impact London as we know it. The journey through London's transport history took in omnibuses, trams, and underground carriages from the 1920s. We even saw an old No. 62 bus. Who knows when that made it's last journey to Barking Station!

As that No. 62 wasn't running we got the tube home and arrived back at Woodward Road, tired but very happy after a brilliant day out! Thanks to the Jack Petchey Foundation, whose funding through their young person's award scheme provided the money for the trip, the wonderful staff and volunteer team and all the young people, who made it a day to remember!
